Eniscope

Take control of your energy consumption

Does your energy cost the earth? Eliminate waste with Eniscope.

“Knowing where to start when reducing energy wastage can be difficult.”

Neil Gould, Powergen

Right now, up to 40% of your energy is going to waste. The trouble is identifying which 40%.

Today’s businesses use dozens… hundreds… even thousands of electrically-powered items without even thinking. Lighting, air-conditioning, escalators, production facilities, conveyors & refrigeration to name just a few.

Essential tools of the trade – but what do they cost to run?

Normally, you can’t see, evaluate or compare the energy consumed by the equipment you use. There’s one monthly – or even quarterly – bill for everything, so any changes you make are based upon guesswork.

Eniscope is a unique energy monitor, which plugs into your system and relays meaningful energy use data and graphical analysis – direct to your computer.

Wall-mounted neatly alongside your building’s fuse board, Eniscope’s compact, self-contained casing combines world-class metering technology with its own, highly secure web server; putting live readings and real-time graphical logs within reach, 24 hours a day, from your desktop, laptop, PDA or mobile phone.

Log in to Eniscope’s unique, fully customisable Energy Dashboard to see all the information you need in a language you understand – whether that’s kW consumption, peak demand, carbon output or money spent – right now, and as an analysis graph of the last few hours, days or weeks.

Instantly, you can spot trends, anomalies and wastage, make informed decisions… and see immediate results from improvements you’ve made. You’re in control.

The result? A smaller carbon footprint, better public perception… and lower energy costs.

“Investing in energy efficiency can be more profitable than the stock market.”

Lindsay Audin, Columbia University

The Business Case

One of the few absolute certainties about tomorrow’s business environment is that energy prices will continue to rise.

Increasingly, power is becoming a major cost centre – even for businesses that are not traditionally energy intensive.

Remember, reductions in your energy costs go straight to your bottom line as pure profit.

…and being leaner and more efficient can enable you to offer better value to your own customers – giving you a competitive edge in the marketplace.

“Forget making poverty history – climate change will make poverty permanent.”

Nazmul Chowdhury

The Moral Imperative

Climate change is now generally recognised as the single biggest threat facing mankind worldwide – making energy waste even more senseless.

Every company has a powerful moral obligation to examine its own energy use, achieving savings where possible.

The 40% that is going to waste is a great place to start.

“Ignoring climate change will be the most costly of all possible choices, for us and our children.”

Peter Ewins, British Mereorological Office

More Than A Meter

Few business realise their energy bill is calculated using several statistics – not simply consumption.

Peak demand is critical. Depending on tariff charges, a surge in usage – lasting a matter of minutes – could massively increase your energy unit price for up to 12 months.

Eniscope’s graphical logs unpack the important detail behind your bill, keeping round the clock checks of every measurable energy parameter. The 18 most salient readings can be viewed graphically 24/7.

Eniscope: your full time energy manager. Virtually.

IMEC

How does iMEC work?

AC induction motors consume more than half of all the worlds’ energy! Unfortunately, motors lack the intelligence to address three key problems that lead to massive energy wastage, unnecessary carbon emissions and undue wear and tear:

1) Fixed speed motor driven applications like escalators cannot intelligently adjust their torque output to match load changes leading to excess energy consumption.

2) Motors that drive applications like pumps and fans cannot intelligently adjust their speed to match load changes and as such consume more power than they need.

3) When starting, a motor develops more torque than is required at full speed. This high inrush of current can lead to mechanical breakdown and peak demand penalties. To avoid the problems associated with starting, motors are often left running continuously even when they are not being used leading to huge energy waste.

The iMEC solution effortlessly addresses all of these problems by introducing intelligence to your existing systems:

1) iMEC can be applied to fixed speed applications and will dynamically adjust the torque output to meet load requirement without altering the speed (see fig. 1). his leads to substantial savings and is ideal for applications like escalators and many others which run at no/low load for long periods of time. In the right applications, payback is typically under two years!

2) iMEC can be specified to intelligently adjust the speed of your motors to match their variable loading so your motors only consume the power they need. This is a vast improvement over traditional control methods such as throttling (see fig. 2). A mere 20% reduction in speed can lead to energy savings of up to 50%!

3) iMEC provides a smooth, step-less acceleration (soft start) of your motors (see fig. 3). This dramatically reduces wear and tear on your system and helps you to avoid peak demand penalties. With a controlled start in place your motors can now be switched off without the fear of re-starting and iMEC can be programmed to perform this function automatically. Auto Switch Off delivers 100% energy savings!

ACES

How does ACES work?

Air conditioning systems are usually dimensioned to cope with the extreme cooling demands of the few hottest days of the year (plus a safety margin). However, in most operational conditions, this maximum output is not required and the system is oversized. So running the system continuously until the room thermostat switches it off means that the system operates with excess capacity for most of the time.

This is where an ACES cuts in. Its sensor-driven software algorithms are designed to detect thermodynamic saturation and to optimize the compressor accordingly. When over capacity is detected, ACES switches the compressor off and avoids inefficient overcooling (see diagrams opposite). ACES switches into “saver mode”, the fan keeps running and your system makes maximum use of the stored cooling energy in the heat exchanger. Once the stored energy is used up, the compressor can work efficiently again and is switched back on. The set room temperature is reached without the inefficient parts of the cooling cycle. This results in significant energy savings without compromising cooling comfort.

CUES

How does CUES work?

Refrigeration units work in a series of cycles – starting and stopping to maintain the required temperature. They usually monitor circulating air temperature in order to decide when to switch on and off – so we call them air cycles. However, circulating air temperature tends to rise quickly, far more quickly than food temperature and, as a result, refrigeration works harder than necessary to maintain stored products at the right temperature. This in turn leads to excessive energy consumption and undue wear and tear on the equipment.

This is where CUES kicks in. CUES consists of a food simulant contained in a double-skinned enclosure. This food simulant mimics the temperature of food at 10mm below the surface. Due to its specific design, CUES ensures that refrigeration keeps food at the correct temperature.

When fitted to the thermostat sensor, which controls the compressor, CUES significantly reduces the frequency of the refrigeration cycles as they are now based on food temperature rather than fluctuating air temperature.

Air cycles typically produce a minimum of 12 cycles/hour and, in some open display cases, 20 cycles/hour. By using CUES as a cycle control mechanism, refrigerated cycles can be reduced by as much as 80%.

As the start-up of a refrigerator compressor uses 3 times more power than in the running cycle, considerable energy savings are achieved. In addition, the more efficient refrigeration cycle leads to a more efficient unit, which then leads to a colder storage area. Consequently, you can turn down the thermostat and enjoy further energy savings without compromising food safety and quality.

Its simple – more efficient refrigeration cycles = substantial energy savings.

Example:

a traditional Dairy Display Case cycles 3 minutes on, 2 minutes off = 12 cycles per hour.

With a CUES fitted, the cycles change to 8 minutes on, 7 minutes off = 4 cycles per hour.

This equates to a 66.7% reduction in starts.

Benefits of CUES

check-mark-cues CUES can achieve savings of up to 30% resulting in a short payback.
check-mark-cues It reduces wear and tear thus extending the life of the equipment.
check-mark-cues Its application results in fewer breakdowns, sensor failures and reduces noise pollution.
check-mark-cues It maintains food at a safer temperature resulting in less product spoilage.
check-mark-cues It is a one-time retro-fit product requiring no further maintenance once installed.

Case study

150 CUES were fitted throughout the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, London. This installation is yielding annual electricity savings of $34,000 in addition to the benefits that come from reduced noise, maintenance and breakdown. As a result of the savings achieved CUES is now being installed in all of the Park Plaza Hotels in the UK.

LESS

How does LESS work?

Conventional fluorescent lighting, while an improvement over the incandescent technology used in the first light bulbs, still suffers from three significant energy wasting problems:

1) Conventional ballasts, which provide the output to the lamp, offer limited control resulting in excess energy consumption and unwanted heat which is expensive and damaging.

2) It has no way of intelligently responding to occupancy changes so lights are frequently left on unnecessarily.

3) It cannot compensate for the presence of natural daylight, so light is produced whether you need it or not.

LESS will effortlessly resolve these problems by bringing intelligence to your existing system and providing you with a comfortable, energy efficient lighting scenario:

1) ‘Daytronic’ ballasts improve the efficiency of the output to the lamp and allow them to be dimmed (see figure 1).

2) State of the art occupancy detection, which can even sense the click of a mouse button, ensures that lights are turned off when not needed (see figure 2).

3) ‘Daylight Harvesting’ sensors respond dynamically to the presence of natural light by intelligently adjusting light intensity to maintain perfect lighting levels (see figure 2).

Benefits of  LESS

check-mark-cues It can deliver total savings of over 50%.
check-mark-cues It is a no compromise, high-comfort, high efficiency solution.
check-mark-cues It offers a simple retro-fit installation.
check-mark-cues It uses the smallest sensors on the market to ensure elegant integration.

If you need more control, more savings and more profit… you need LESS.

LED Halogen Replacements

Note: Due to widely varying range of available light fittings from different manufacturers, it is advisable to check any fitting against the below dimensions to ensure compatibility. Compatible high quality fittings are available from Enigin. Please note that due to the internal LED drive circuitry, the two models are not suitable for use with a dimmer, please enquire should you require information on our dimmable versions.

Example calculation

An installation has 200 x 35 W halogen downlights which are illuminated for an average of 12 hours per day, 300 days per year. The halogens have a life expectancy of about 2000 hours and cost £2 to replace.

Using Enigin’s LED replacements instead would save approximately 30W per lamp replaced. Each halogen is replaced twice yearly.

costing £4 x 200 = £800 per year.

This represents a total saving of

30W x 200 x 12 hours = 72 kW per day.

At an electricity cost of 12p per kW, this is £8.64 per day or £2,592 per year, giving a total saving on electricity and replacement lamps of

£2,592 +£ 800 = £3392 per year
